I was a fish once

it bubbles under the surface

and grows

I cannot silence it

I don’t know how

it flaps its wings and flies

into the starless night

like a new moon

its edges ragged and red

it carries me onward

burns away my skin

until it peels off me

like a snake’s

my heart’s drumming

in the background

a reminder of past footsteps

along the evolutionary path

I was a fish once

I glistened like the stars

the mountains sighed and sang

and trees danced

rivers heaved themselves

across open landscapes

pooled themselves into lakes

the skies shimmered with rain

and washed away the mud

what I saw was a question-mark

what I breathed was air
